Dear President of :

I am writing to you on behalf of the 55 AIA members who co-sponsored Resolution 15-6: 7 World Trade Center, which will be voted on at this year’s AIA National Convention.

We are sending this email to provide you with information about Resolution 15-6 for the purpose of helping you decide how to vote at the Annual Business Meeting on May 16.

First, we invite you to visit our resolution website, WTC7Resolution.org, where you can learn all about Resolution 15-6.

Second, if it is consistent with your policies, we ask you to send a brief email to your members, or specifically to those members serving as delegates, providing a link to WTC7Resolution.org. To make this easier for you, a suggested email template is provided below my signature.

Third, we invite all those attending the convention to visit our expo booth, #4336, which will be located kitty-corner to the AIA Town Hall.

Background

7 World Trade Center, also known as WTC 7, was a 47-story, steel-framed high-rise building located on the north side of the World Trade Center complex. It fell symmetrically at free-fall acceleration into its own footprint at 5:20 p.m. on September 11, 2001. At 610 feet, it would have been the tallest building in 26 states.

As architects, we are gravely concerned about the little-known collapse of this building. We are even more concerned about the cause of collapse reported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Following its three-year investigation, NIST concluded that office fires caused a single column to fail, triggering the complete collapse of the entire structure. As stated in the resolution, we, along with thousands of other building professionals, believe NIST’s conclusions are fatally flawed.

Requested Action

We are urging the AIA to address this matter by adopting a Position Statement. The proposed Position Statement does not take a position on the cause of the collapse. Instead, it recognizes that many members of the architecture profession believe the NIST investigation did not adhere to the principles of the scientific method, and it states that the AIA supports a new investigation into the collapse.

We hope that, after reviewing these materials and visiting our expo booth, you will vote in favor of this important resolution. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Daniel B. Barnum, FAIA
Secretary of the Board of Directors
